3-Card Poker
Poker is a game that requires lots of patience. Playing the game in the correct manner you need patience because there will be lots of downtown when you have to wait by folding most of your hands without any action. However, this does no imply that you should take it lightly and turn your focus away from it.
You can become a good player only when you remain attentive all the time and try to learn the approaches of the opponents at the table. Your focus can help you to make learn the tendencies of the opponents and you can figure out the players that are showing hesitance, aggressiveness, bluffing or showing strong cards only.
It is very essential to have proper decision making ability to excel in this game. I am playing Texas hold’em for several years and during this long period I have built few mental exercises in this regard. I hope these exercises can help you to take proper decisions at the poker table and help you to solve the problems more aptly.
Guesswork
Guesswork is the first thing that you need to do. Take a good look at how your opponents are playing their hands and based on that observation guess what they are holding. For instance, the flop comes with two spades J-10-2 and there is a raise, a call and a bet. You have to speculate the hands these players are having. Maybe there is a set or two pairs with the raiser, the caller is having flush or straight and the better might be having something like J-K. Your guesses will keep on improving with time and your study at the table.
In a friendly game that took place recently, one player held a bet of A-A-10-2 and Mike did the calling. The raising is done by a third player and the first bettor called. This time Mike re-raised and tried to turn over his cards on the river and then I did the calling with “Ace-Teb,” and that is exactly what he was holding. I guessed it correctly because of my proper observation. I had observed that Mike got a brilliant hand and he was wary about being chased by the opponents and that is why he chose to call the first bet. Soon after a raise was made he re-raised so that he can make maximum money and that was enough for me to get the indications. In case Mike held the hands of a full house or three aces, he would have ‘raised’ earlier and tried to sort for any straight or flush draws. So, you have to be attentive to catch up these things at the board and then you can become a master of the game.
Visualize your game
Another mental exercise that is of equal importance is visualizing my own play. Let’s take an example where 8-J-3 is the flop. I have some junk kind of hand like 5-2, but I would act as if I am holding a 9-10 hand. What can I do- check? Bet? Fold? Raise? Or make others believe that I got a flop with a set of three. This mental exercise allows me to frequently think about my actions on the board. This really helps when you hold those cards actually.
